Enable the remote audio and microphone devices over RDP

If you are having a Windows Operating system , you already have a Remote Desktop Connection application installed on the system.

1. Get started by searching “Remote Desktop Connection” or “mstsc” in the search box.

2. Click on “Show Options” → “Local Resources“.

3. Navigate to “Remote audio” and click on “Settings…“.

4. Next, enable the “Record from this computer” and click on “OK“, then connect to the remote desktop.

Server End Configuration

Once you configure the microphone access to remote desktop server, now you need to install Remote Desktop Session Host → Client Experience → Audio and video playback from Server Manager.

1. Log in to your Windows Server 2012, 2019, or later → Open Server Manager.

2. Click on  “Add Roles and Features“.

3. In the Installation Type section, select Role-based or feature-based installation → Next.

4. In Server Selection, select your Windows Server, if your server is configured in the network, then select the particular server from the list to process the installation → Next.

5. In Server Roles, select Remote Desktop Services → Click on Next.

6. Choose the Remote Desktop service roles to install

To ensure your microphone and audio function correctly, we recommend ticking Remote Desktop Connection Broker, Remote Desktop GatewayRemote Desktop Session Host, and Remote Desktop Web Access.

Press Next until you’re able to press the Install button. After installation, restart your server.


If still microphone is not working then configure the below changes,

1. Login to Windows Server →  Search and Open gpedit.msc.

2. Navigate to Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Remote Desktop Services.

3. Now, navigate to Remote Desktop Services → Remote Desktop Session Host → Device and Resource Redirection.

4. Right-click on Allow audio recording redirection → Click on Edit.

5. Now select “Enabled” radio button → Click on “OK“.

6. You need to enable Windows Audio on both machines in the services.msc. They must be in the “Running” state.

7. Then right-click on the speaker icon in the right corner of the screen – select Open sound setting – select Microsoft privacy setting – Allow the apps to access your microphone
