How to Install WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) on Windows Server 2022/2025

Introduction

Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) allows IT administrators and developers to run Linux distributions directly on Windows without the need for a full virtual machine.    • As a result, WSL 2 is not available by default on VPS/Hyper-V VMs, and the kernel cannot be initialized → leading to error 0x800701bc

Step 5: Set WSL Default Version to 1

1. Open PowerShell (Admin).

2. Run the command:

   wsl --set-default-version 1

   

   This ensures all newly installed distributions use WSL 1, which is compatible with Hyper-V VPS without nested virtualization.

Step 6: Initialize Linux

1. Open the installed Linux app from the Start menu.

2. Create your username and password when prompted.
