How to fix RDP hangs on login on Windows 11 24H2/Windows Server 2025
Windows 11 users have been grumbling about Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) problems since the big 24H2 update was released in October 2024. Over the past months, you may have struggled to establish RDP connections, which can hang or freeze. Windows 11/Windows Server 2025 RDP is stuck at login if the user account is already logged in. The session connects and stops at the desktop wallpaper. If you disconnect the user and log back in multiple times, you can RDP with that user.
As it turns out, multiple bugs might be involved. Microsoft has yet to confirm anything, and it’s unclear if they’re working on a fix. If you’re dealing with Remote Desktop problems in Windows 11, know that you aren’t alone and that there are some workarounds you can try.
How to fix Windows Server 2025/Windows 11 24H2’s RDP issues
1. Edit the connection performance of the Remote Desktop Connection
Open the Remote Desktop Connection -> Show Options. Go to Experience -> Performance. Then select Low-speed broadband (256kbps – 2 Mbps)
Then connect to the VPS
2. To fix hanging when reconnecting to disconnected RDP sessions in Windows 11 24H2, you need to make the following changes to the Group Policy Editor:
Go to Local Group Policy Editor > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Connections.
3. Now, open Select network detection on the server.
4. Set this policy to Enabled, and select Turn off Connect Time Detect and Continuous Network Detect.
To apply the Group Policy changes, you do not need to reboot, but you should run the gpupdate /force command.
Some users told us that turning off Continuous Network Detect is more than enough to address the problem.
Summary
In our tests, Windows Latest observed that making these changes to Windows 11/Windows Server 2025 makes RDP work again with Windows. However, let me know in the comments below if you still have issues.
