We will also discover what .deb files are and why they are necessary for managing software on your system.<\/p>\n<h2>What is a .deb file?<\/h2>\n<p>A .deb file is a package format used in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cherryservers.com\/blog\/debian-12-bookworm-release\">Debian<\/a>\u00a0and Debian-based Linux distributions, such as Ubuntu, Linux Mint, or Kali Linux. This software package contains everything needed for installation: the program\u2019s files, details about the software, and scripts to manage the installation process.<\/p>\n<h2>Prerequisites<\/h2>\n<p>To follow along this tutorial and install deb packages, you will need the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A system account with administrative privileges;<\/li>\n<li>The latest Ubuntu version 22.04 is installed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to install .deb file in Ubuntu: 4 Methods<\/h2>\n<p>We will cover four different methods to install deb files in Ubuntu, from using the Graphical User Interface (GUI) to using the terminal. We install the browser Opera using the\u00a0<code>.deb<\/code>\u00a0file that you can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/deb.opera.com\/opera\/pool\/non-free\/o\/opera-stable\/opera-stable_105.0.4970.16_amd64.deb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">download from their website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Your browser will download the file by default in the\u00a0<code>Downloads<\/code>\u00a0folder.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How to open a .deb file?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A\u00a0<code>.deb<\/code>\u00a0file being nothing more than an archived file, you can easily open and view its content with the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click on the\u00a0<code>.deb<\/code>\u00a0file<\/li>\n<li>Select\u00a0<code>open With Archive Manager<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This will show you the content of the .deb file, as shown below:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/green.cloud\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Screenshot_3-4.png\" alt=\".deb open with archive manager\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We can see that the archive contains three files, namely:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>control archive: it contains the maintainer scripts and the package meta-data such as the package name, version, dependencies, etc.;<\/li>\n<li>data archive: it contains the actual files to install;<\/li>\n<li>debian-binary: it contains the package format version number.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We will now go through the different methods to install the\u00a0<code>.deb<\/code>\u00a0file.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"How to install a .deb file on Ubuntu | VPS Tutorial\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Yi4pzY5u1VA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Method 1: Install a .deb file using the apt command<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The simplest way to install a\u00a0<code>.deb<\/code>\u00a0file is using the\u00a0<code>apt<\/code>\u00a0command, which is installed by default on Ubuntu.<\/p>\n<p>Run the following command in the\u00a0<code>Downloads<\/code>\u00a0folder to install the\u00a0<code>.deb<\/code>\u00a0file:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"language-bash\" tabindex=\"0\">apt install .\/filename.deb<\/pre>\n<pre>wget https:\/\/artifacts.elastic.co\/downloads\/elasticsearch\/elasticsearch-7.14.1-amd64.deb<\/pre>\n<pre>apt install .\/elasticsearch-7.14.1-amd64.deb<\/pre>\n<h3><strong>Method 2: Install a .deb file using the dpkg <\/strong><strong>command<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<code>dpkg<\/code>\u00a0package provides the low-level infrastructure for handling Debian software packages. It is installed by default on Ubuntu.<\/p>\n<p>We can now install the\u00a0<code>.deb<\/code>\u00a0file using the following command:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted has-gray-100-background-color has-background\">dpkg -i &lt;debfilename&gt;<\/pre>\n<pre>wget https:\/\/packages.ntop.org\/apt\/20.04\/all\/apt-ntop.deb<\/pre>\n<pre>dpkg -i apt-ntop.deb<\/pre>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/green.cloud\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Screenshot_2-3.png\" alt=\".deb open with archive manager\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Method 3: Install a .deb file using gdebi GUI<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>gdebi is a software that allows you to install local deb packages, resolving and installing the\u00a0<code>.deb<\/code>\u00a0dependencies. It also contains a graphical user interface.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> Install gdebi<\/p>\n<p>You can install gdebi using the following command in your terminal:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"language-bash\" tabindex=\"0\"><code class=\"language-bash\"><span class=\"token function\">apt<\/span> <span class=\"token function\">install<\/span> gdebi\r\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p><strong>Setup 2:<\/strong> Now, right-click on the .deb file you want to install and choose \u201c<strong>Open With Other Application<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n<div class=\"text-center content-ad\">\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-449454\" src=\"https:\/\/green.cloud\/docs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Screenshot_9-3.png\" alt=\"Install Deb Files on Ubuntu Using Software Center\" width=\"640\" height=\"372\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>2.
